our little place – the kitchen

May 4, 2010

welcome to the kitchen at our little place!  With about a 5 X 4 space to cook in, it is definitely, er – cozy, shall we say? This is the teeniest part of our house, but it is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots.

It is a work in progress, but here is a quick tour of what we’ve done so far.

The kitchen was newly remodeled when we moved in, so it has a large sink and nice stainless steel, gas appliances (a half dishwasher and a single oven). Other than those great advantages, we had our work cut out for us to make this kitchen work in terms of space.

We got shelf baskets from the Container Store to add extra storage. The one above our sink holds our dishtowels. Inside the cabinet above the sink we have another one. We had to take advantage of the vertical space too. So we’ve stored cookbooks, mixing bowls, and a platter above the fridge. On top of the cabinets we have some less frequently used pieces, like a wine cooler, cupcake holder, and other party pieces. We have stackable sugar and flour containers on the cabinet.

The casing over the radiator is my favorite feature! I call it my “sitting stoop.” I can sit here and talk to Tim while he cooks (yes, he is the cook in our family). Imagine: night time, open window, breezy, cooking and great conversation – ahh perfection.

We’ve also decided to hang items to make up for limited drawer and cabinet space. We hung our measuring cups underneath our cabinets. We’re currently searching for a pot and pan rack – I think we will hang that over my sitting stoop. The kitchen has these thin + small but uber-nifty little drawers between the stove and the fridge. We put all of our cooking and baking utensils in those.

You can see the cabinets are not huge, but they are a decent size. We added tiered shelving inside to make room for spices – we have like 50, no joke. The cabinet on the right is our “pantry.” Yep. Looks like forced fresh cooking for us! I also like these little cubbies between the stove and fridge. We put our mugs there.

And THIS, my friends, is everything else that is waiting for a home in our kitchen:

Yes. We still have that much more stuff to put away. Which is why we bought a very important, very tall, very lovely european cabinet that will go in this very spot and hold all of this stuff. It get’s delivered this weekend and I can’t wait for you to see it!

How cute is your sitting stoop?! I just adore your kitchen, it’s cozy and organized and beautiful. Have you visited Ikea? They have wonderful ways to organize a small kitchen. Yours reminds me of that. :) Congrats on your new place!
