obsessive consumption

June 16, 2010

I was fascinated by this book I spotted over at grain edit. It’s called Obsessive Consumption: What Did You Buy  Today. Over the past several years, Kate Bingaman-Burt used illustrations to documents the things that she purchased …everyday things, like parking tickets, eyebrow waxings, gum, cardigans, calculators…

It’s pretty amazing when you look at her collection. Her illustrations are entertaining. Artwork by itself. But as a whole, the drawings are representative of  our consumer society. I can imagine that drawing the items you buy on a daily basis would make you think twice about what you consume. It would also probably become a catalog or a snapshot of your life at that moment – wedding season, pursuing a degree, vacation…

Take a look. You can see more on her website here, or buy the book on Amazon.

If you were doing this, what would you draw today? I would draw a coffee. And a coke. Maybe I should draw one big fat doodle of caffeine…
