favorite water parks in DC

August 28, 2012

Growing up, we spent almost our entire summers at the pool, only coming out of the water when we wanted snacks and when the lifeguard called for – to our torture – adult swim. Although Emerson is not quite at the sharks-and-minnows age, we still like to spend some time in the water during the summer. While neighborhood pools are scarce and often overcrowded, the DC area has several great outdoor water parks that are free and lots of fun. Here are our top three spots…

The Yards Park DC

The Yards Park is one of DC’s newest parks, found right in the middle of the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. We love the fountains, the ankle-deep reflecting pool (wading allowed!), and the grassy area (perfect for running around). We like bringing a picnic lunch and eating at the tables under the canopy.

Sculpture Garden DC

We’ve loved coming to the Sculpture Garden (and Jazz in the Garden) since we first moved here six years ago. Now, we’ve introduced Emerson to the garden – she loves taking her shoes off and putting her feet in the fountain.

The Spraygrounds, found all throughout neighborhoods in Arlington, are new to me, although I think they’ve been around awhile. However, since this is my first summer with a toddler, they’ve quickly become a top spot on our list, especially when we want just a quick cool-down after lunch. Sadly, most of them close after Labor Day. Guess we’ll be anxiously awaiting Memorial Day next year!
